Math Practice Sites

http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/math.htm

is a site we use with our smartboard for a quick, fun way to reinforce the concepts we are learning and practicing in Math.  Both grades have been comparing numbers up to 1000.  You can find these games under the place value section.  We've also been building and drawing different ways to make numbers.  "Fruit Shoot Place Value" and "Scooter Quest Jr" are a few good ones to try.

Apologies

My apologies for falling behind on the class blog.  I've spent the evening catching up now that report cards have been turned in.

December 3rd- "Oh Christmas Tree" Field Trip!

On December 3rd our class will be going to a field trip with Ms. Roberts' class to the BC Forest Discovery Centre in Duncan.  The program we will be participating in is called, "Oh Christmas Tree" and it is a festive program that allows children to explore the evolution of the Christmas tree.  Inside a historic 1905 schoolhouse we will experience how trees have changed, from candles to modern LED lights.  We'll get to create a keepsake Christmas tree ornament and ride on the decorated Christmas train.  We are really looking forward to it!
A permission form will be sent home on Wednesday.  Specific times will be included on this form.  Please look out for it.

Birch Tree Landscapes

We enjoyed experimenting, once again, with warm and cool colours, line, and wet on wet painting.  This is our last fall painting and each and everyone is unique and stunning.  A few are displayed in the hall but we decided to keep the rest in our classroom- we liked them so much.

Student of the Week- November 19-22

Ali (and Lola)

Ali shared her poster and brought in her pet bunny Lola to show her classmates.  Ali also explained how she takes care of her pets.  As you can see from the photos, Lola is a very relaxed rabbit and we all enjoyed petting her, feeding her, and (a lucky few) cuddling her!

We Remember...

Students created a stunning display in honor of Remembrance Day.  They wrote touching poems entitled, "I Choose Peace" and painted poppy fields using a wet on wet technique.  Below are our bulletin boards featuring their poetry and paintings.  Please come upstairs to view in person.  I will post a few poetry pieces tomorrow.  They were lovely and students were very proud of their work.

COOL CATS

We practiced magnification of the image to create cool cats, each with it's own personality as I'm sure you can see.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK- Matthew

Last Friday, Matthew presented his "About Me" poster like a pro and he shared his favorite stuffy, his love of jaguars, and his trophy with his classmates.

Goldstream naturalist, Bre, visits Div. 9 to talk about bats

We had a fun and informative presentation on bats last week.  Goldstream naturalist, Bre, brought in a bat skeleton, a sample of bat fur and wings, bat guano, a model to demonstrate the weight of local bats, and lots of fun games to teach us all about bats.  Students played a game to experience echolocation firsthand and they had to find their bat baby using their senses of smell and hearing as bats do.  We also played a rousing game of bat jeopardy that had students trying to win insects as they answered questions about what they had learned.  Our group was able to impress Bre by our knowledge based on our own research and with our thoughtful questions.
Students are trying to find their baby bat using their sense of smell and  hearing.

Bat Jeopardy

Sara shows a sample of the actual size and weight of one of our local bats.

This is bat that died in the attic of Goldstream's Nature House.

Our Student of the Week gets dressed up as a bat so we can learn all about bat anatomy.

Matt was a good sport!!

Jordan had to find Arianna using "echolocation."
